Digitalisation

There is no doubt that Digitalisation is already improving the energy systems in sectors related to safety, productivity, accessibility, and sustainability. With the use of digital technologies, the sector becomes more connected, smarter, more efficient and reliable. Collaboration between the various stakeholders becomes easier with the help of new technologies and the consumer is more and more included in the decision-making process.

In the Digitalisation Hub, we are going to investigate the nature of these technologies and learn from innovative projects that are in the making, already running or which have finished their cycle, and the secrets of their success (or failure).

Communities are grappling with the challenge of understanding how best to connect the rapidly growing volumes of data from their existing service operations (e.g. energy, transport, etc.), new Internet of Things (IoT) sensors (conventional and crowdsourced), social interactions and the like – in order to deliver better outcomes for their citizens and their local economy. In Horizon2020, in the European Innovation Partnerships on Smart Cities and Communities as well as in other EC initiatives and studies, the European Commission and other stakeholders have developed a number of successful digital solutions, which will reach implementation maturity in the coming couple of years. To support their piloting and deployment, the European Commission has launched a number of projects such as the Smart City Lighthouse projects and the Internet of Things large-scale pilots and will launch further projects and initiatives within Horizon Europe, the Digital Europe Programme (combined with Regional Funds) and the Connecting Europe Facility. The aim is open interoperable cross-sectorial urban green digital platforms&services that will enable an easy standardised access to new data sets and large scale roll-out of AI driven services that go beyond the individual interventions, for example in Smart Energy, Smart Mobility, waste and secondary resource management, industry and (re)manufacturing, healthcare, e-government, etc. This, in turn, will bring to European citizens and businesses the benefits of fully interoperable, scalable and decentralised smart city and smart rural areas ecosystems capable of supporting cross-sector digital services. The same Internet-of-Things-based platforms are also compatible and reusable for the individual needs of the different sectors such as energy, transport, etc. and are being piloted in the above-mentioned large-scale pilots.  As an integral part of the platform-based interoperability solutions, comprehensive ontologies have been developed for the Internet of Things and most notably the SAREF ontology with independent extensions for all major sectors such as Cities, Energy, Mobility, Water, Environment, Buildings, Agriculture and Food, Industry and Manufacturing, etc.
