As part of energy transition, ICT tools and communication infrastructure are currently being researched and developed towards utilizing the excess RES-produced energy which is currently being curtailed. The proliferation of distributed energy generators and their interconnection to MV grids is expected to increase grid stability problems that will either require investments in billions for strengthening the grid or the utilization of smart ICT coordination and planning systems such as PLANET, which potentially could alleviate the need for investments in physical infrastructure, allowing win-win operational scenarios for the DSO and the flexibility providers.
PLANET enables decarbonisation of energy sector and utilization of large amounts of excess RES energy to the grid via sector coupling of power, gas and heat networks. As an end-result, a decision support system will be developed to provide a multigrid co-simulation environment for network planning and assist in the assessment by policy makers, network operators and facility managers of the benefits stemming from the provision of ancillary services by flexible energy P2X conversion and storage facilities. PLANET provides a glimpse in how such synergies can be achieved in practice.
