District Heating and Cooling: Decarbonisation through the power of connection

As policy-makers and the wider stakeholder community look for smart, cost-effective ways of making the energy transition, the notion of sector integration is rapidly gaining attention. Instead of treating heat, power and transport is entirely separate fields of energy demand, the energy system of the future will need to exploit their potential to work in concert.

In this context, district heating and cooling networks (DHC), with their ability to supply sustainable heat to cities while also facilitating the integration of a higher share of renewable power into the energy mix by linking previously disparate parts of our energy system together, can play a far more significant role than was previously imagined. We look at a sector that appears ready for a period of significant growth and substantial change.
