Research Note: Current Status of the European Smart Metering Market
Europe is one of the most mature regional smart meter markets in the world and highlights some of the innovative trends in the industry. At the same time, it still includes several countries with significant untapped potential. In large part, the region is defined by the EU smart metering mandate requiring all qualifying member states—that is, those that reached a positive cost-benefit analysis (CBA) result—to deploy smart meters to 80% of customers by the end of a fast approaching 2020. Several major countries, including France and the UK, are in the midst of national deployments in an attempt to meet the deadline. French national utility Enedis is expected to reach the 80% mark on time and finish its full rollout in 2021, while the UK deployment is currently less than half completed, and despite serious efforts is almost certain to conclude post-deadline. Similarly, Austria and Ireland have encountered delays and are expected to conclude national rollouts by 2022 and 2024, respectively. Countries on track to wrap up national rollouts on time include the Netherlands, Spain and Norway (although not an EU country)...
