Talk community interview: RESERVE

See what Dr. Fiona Williams, the RESERVE Project Coordinator and Research Director of Ericsson, has to say about the opportunities and threats she sees for the industry.
  • What is for your project the biggest occasion for the smart energy industry?

For RESERVE, one of the biggest opportunities for the smart energy industry is the digitalisation of the energy networks and the shifting to purchasing services rather than assets.  Another good chance is given by the local voltage regulation for up to 100% RES in the energy generation mix, with new efficient techniques that have already been shown to work in the RESERVE field trials. At longer term, many new techniques for frequency balancing offer great potential to reduce CO2 emissions and will enable up to 100% RES without hydro-electric power generation.

  • What is for your project the biggest threat to the smart energy industry?

The biggest threat to the smart energy industry is from the RESERVE point of view the lack of a will to change at regulatory and at government level.  In some countries it could mean that new markets are not opened up and that the European Energy sector could suffer because other global markets move ahead faster and leverage the market opportunities, leaving Europe to catch up.

  • What are the key topics your project will highlight at this year’s EUW?

RESERVE key topics includes new techniques for enabling voltage and frequency balancing in the context of up to 100% RES in the energy generation mix, without hydro-electric power and enabled by 5G based ICT.
