Meet the projects: SOGNO
What do you see as the biggest opportunity for the energy industry?
The biggest opportunity for the energy industry is the integration of new disruptive technologies like 5G, blockchain or artificial intelligence, which enable advanced management solutions and completely new business models. DSOs for example could connect their assets to cloud-based and low-cost services, run on a platform equipped with machine learning and data analytics tools, to unlock advanced monitoring and management. With the new mobile communication standard 5G and the use of edge cloud all the services can be even offered in real-time.
What do you see as the biggest threat to the energy industry?
The biggest threat is the conservative approach that some energy players may have towards completely new technologies coming from different sectors. In the digitalized smart grid, DSOs need to be innovative and progressive for new solutions and open to explore new approaches based on multi-disciplinary concepts. At the same time, regulations have to quickly react to this rapidly evolving scenario, keeping up the pace with the ongoing innovations and creating the best conditions for the energy industry to invest in digital technologies. An important step forward in this direction was already done with the last EU Winter Package, which recognizes that investments in software-based services should be treated equally as investments in hardware.
What are the key topics you will highlight at this year’s EUW?
The SOGNO vision is a distribution grid where cloud-based turnkey services will allow low-cost solutions for grid awareness and self-healing. The use of deep learning as engine of the services and of 5G for the fast and reliable connection between the cloud and the field are additional ingredients of our recipe!
